Willa and Stuart B. Woods Graduate Scholarship in Physics
A $7,350 scholarship has been endowed by Mrs. Willa Woods in memory of her late husband Dr. Stuart B. Woods. Dr. Woods received his PhD in Physics from the University of British Columbia in 1952. He worked as a research officer for the National Research Council in Ottawa until 1959 at which time he accepted a faculty position at the University of Alberta. He later became Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Alberta. Dr. Woods specialized as an experimentalist in Low Temperature and Solid State Physics. Mrs. Woods supported her husband's entire academic career and has established this award in his memory. The scholarship is granted to an outstanding graduate student in Physics who is specializing in experimental studies in quantum materials with a preference to those whose studies focus on a low temperature environment. Recommendation is made by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
